Chapter Thirteen

KAITLYN

After Tom leaves, I take time to freshen up a bit and change before I start to prepare our picnic lunch. I grab lunchmeat, cheese, and condiments out of the refrigerator, and bread out of the pantry—everything I need to make a variety of sandwiches. Once I’m finished making them, I wrap them up in plastic wrap and place them in the cooler along with a couple of bottles of water and some cans of lemonade. I toss in some sliced fruit and veggies, as well as a bag of chips. Realizing that we need something to eat off of, I also pack a bag with paper plates and napkins.

As I’m finishing getting everything ready, my phone rings with Arya’s special ringtone. I grab my phone off of the counter to answer. “Hey!”

“Hey, Kaitlyn! I just wanted to call to see how your Fourth of July was yesterday.”

“It was amazing! I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun I’ve had over the last week.”

“Did you go to all of the events that you were telling me about the last time we talked?”

“Not all of them, but most.”

“Sounds like you’ve been having a great time. How’s work going?”

“Honestly, I’ve only gone into the clinic once so far. Julia and I have been off for the holiday. Tomorrow’s my first day working the desk on my own.”

“Good luck.”

“Thanks. It won’t be that bad. I love seeing all of the adorable animals that come in.”

“I bet. Plus, I’m sure it’s a lot more enjoyable working for your cousin than it is working for Layla.”

“Definitely.” Checking the time on my watch, I see that it’s almost noon. “I’d love to catch up more, but I actually have to go. I have plans.”

“Plans, huh? What are you doing?” Arya asks curiously.

“Tom is taking me on a hike, and we’re having a picnic lunch.”

“A hike? Like in the woods?”

I laugh. “Probably. He hasn’t told me exactly where we’re going—just that the destination will be worth it.”

“Well, have fun with that,” Arya says with a hint of distaste in her voice. “It wouldn’t be my idea of a fun afternoon, but as long as you’re into it that’s what matters, I guess.”

“Thanks. I’m sure it’ll be fun—I’m curious to know where he’s taking me. I’ll text you later.”

“Okay. Bye, Kaitlyn.”

“Bye.” I hang up the phone just as there’s a knock at the door.

“Hey, Kaitlyn. You look wonderful today; are you ready to go on a hike?” Tom asks when I open the door.

“Yep, all set. I’ve got the food all ready, too.” I run to the kitchen to grab the cooler that I packed, along with a beach towel—just in case—since Tom told me to wear a swimsuit. Tom takes the cooler from me as we walk to his truck. He places it in the backseat before opening the door for me.

“So, any hints on where we’re going?” I ask.

He grins. “Nope. You’ll just have to wait to see.”

“Alright.” I roll down the window, letting the light summer breeze hit my face as we drive.
